Dear Developer: This is how we make time tracking easy

Published {$created} by Tina Blum

I have worked as a developer but also as a Scrum Master, guiding developers. I have worked with architects, managers, product owners - the whole crew.

One thing I've seen again and again, (especially) developers, hate tracking time.

Code vs. Clock

Developers want to code! They want to solve problems, build things, stay in the flow

Having to track their time just make them want to punch something.

Trying to remember what you did, at a specific time, on af specific task, having to write it down somewhere or remembering to track it.

It feels like a waste of time, especially when you're deep in the zone. It breaks focus and brings you out of the zone.

Here's the thing, you still need to track your time!

Sorry to say, time tracking is often required.

If you're working in Europe, many companies now have a politic saying you HAVE TO track your time, this is due to the EU Working Time Directive

It could also be that you need the costumer to pay you by the hour, you need accurate time records for invoicing. Otherwise you (or the company) might lose money or even lose a client.

I used to work for a company making IT systems for financial institution. Our clients payed us for our time, and I had to track the exact time for the each bank.

I couldn't risk tracking work done wrong. It could mean billing the wrong client.

So you have to do it! There's no way out.

What does your manager need?

Your manager needs a clear picture of what's going on:

- Which project/costumer you have been working for

- How many hours you have spent

- sometimes even which specific tasks you completed

We made it easy!

At Nureti, we built time tracking for real people - including developers who hates interruptions.

What is an easy way to track time?

I think it depends...

on your work, on your role, on the rules in your workplace and on you.

For a developer it needs be with as few interruptions as possible.

There are more than one way of tracking your time with Nureti, but let me show you one of my favorites.

The stopwatch

Our stopwatch feature is perfect for developers who just want to get going.

I would have loved to track my time like this, working as a developer.

You can use the stopwatch on you computer or on your mobile device.

When you start working, just hit start - and let it run in the background.

If you are interrupted during your work, someone calls you, you are having you lunchbreak or something else, you hit Pause - close the popup box, and leave the watch until you are ready to start the timer again, then you press Resume and the timer starts again.

When you're done, and ready to register your work.

Click Pause, the box for choosing project and task will pop up.

Chose project and task

Click Register time and you are done.

That's it!

No more memory games. No extra effort. Just tracking as you go.

Easy peasy,

We will show you more ways to track time with Nureti in future blog posts.
